Today when I turned on my computer, I got JAWS, JAWS, JAWS, JAWS, JAWS, JAWS, JAWS for Windows is ready. And in the recent past it has stuttered just once or twice when turning it off. Does anyone know if this could be a sign of something wrong with JAWS, or is it my computer?
Jaws is drunk?
Has tourettes?
Has a speech impediment?
L o L.
Yes, I know that that last post was less than helpful... you may flog me with a wet noodle.
Hi Blue Velvet,
What version of JAWS are you running and under what version of Windows? Can you tell us anything about your system - processor speed, memory etc?
It somewhat sounds like the synth was looping a little but we'd need to know computer specs and the like to really know for sure.
I'm running JAWS 13 with an XP laptop with a terabyte of memory. I've had it for about a year and a half, and the stuttering problem is very recent.
Westcoastcdngrl, you're right, not very helpful but very funny. Thanks for the laugh.
Your HardDrive isn't the memory you have, the ram is the memory your computer uses to store programs it's using right away. the 1 tb is just where the files are kept
So what is it you need to know then? My RAM? If so, how do I find that info?
In system info it lists your ram, if I remember right it's called memory in win xp
Hi Blue Velvet,
Sometimes JAWS can chop or appear to stutter because you are short of system resources (usually because you don't have enough RAM).
However, I did read about someone solving a stuttering problem last year running JAWS 13 under Windows XP by altering some Accessibility options in Control Panel. This may also work for you given your combination, and even if it doesn't, the settings shouldn't break anything. I should say that that I'm not running this combination so can't vouch for the fix personally.
If you want to try this, go into start, settings, Control Panel, and choose Accessibility Options.
Then press control tab until you are in display.
Tab until you hear cursor blink rate and set this to 63%. Then tab until you hear a slider about cursor width options and set this to 0.
See if that solves the problem.
Thanks, Ed. I followed you're instructions. The curser blink rate is now set to 63%, but the width was already at 0. It might be awhile before I know for sure that this change made any difference since the stuttering thing does not happen all the time. I appreciate your help.
yes, when the blink rate is set to more or less than 63, jaws will repeat information over and over. TI suspect Ed g is right and this will fix your situation.
Forgot to mention in xp upgrading windows updates can update sound drivers which I've seen cause jaws to studdar.
Not trying to scare you, of course, and you're probably fine, but the only time I had JAWS stutter particularly badly, it was because my hard drive was failing.
and if it is, there are other signs such as clicking, file write errors, etc.
your puter isn't that old if i remember right, so you shouldn't have this issue, but i've seen more than one case of a hard drive failing after two years on recent models of laptops. i hope for your sake that you have your data backed up someware, in case of this happening.
if your sputtering continues, post what kinda processor and amount of ram you are running.
to find this info,
go to your desktop,
hit alt enter on my computer
when the ddialog box comes up, you can use your jaws curcer to review it. it'll tell you your system make, model, and amount of ram in the general tab (which is the first tab to come up when launching the system properties.
to make life easier, i'd suggest coppying that info from the jaws vertual buffer, so that you can paste it in this topic if need be.
to do that, once in the my computer properties window, hit jaws key+alt+w.
select the content and hit control +c to copy that to the clipboard.
when in your edit box for replying to this thread, hit control+v to paste that info in the thread.
to trim it down, what we need is this part here (i'll copied from my specs to show you.)
System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3
Manufactured and supported by: Dell Inspiron E-1705
Genuine Intel(R) CPU
T2250 @ 1.73GHz
1.73 GHz, 2.99 GB of RAM
I hope this helps. if you need anything else cleared up, feel free to ask.
John
A long long time ago, like in 1998 or 99, I would get da da da da da da da da da dialup connection dialog. Sounded like Max Headroom.
